Itchy (pruritic) skin, hair loss (alopecia), skin lesions (granulomas) and other dermatologic conditions in cats are stressful. Witnessing a cat constantly licking its skin, develop painful lesions or rashes, and in some cases experience gastrointestinal issues including vomiting and diarrhea can be very worrisome for a pet parent. Causes of these issues are vast and often many clinical signs overlap.
A detailed, stepwise approach is required to determine and properly treat dermatologic disease. At the CSC, this is accomplished by utilizing a combination of laboratory and cytology findings, customized diet trials, skin biopsies or cultures, serum allergy testing, and medication trials.
Following a definitive diagnosis, a targeted treatment plan is developed which may include diet management, medical management, or immunotherapy. Dermatologic diseases we are proficient in managing at the CSC include dietary allergies, environmental allergies, feline eosinophilic granulomas, indolent (rodent) ulcers, atopic dermatitis, ringworm, fungal disease (histoplasmosis), flea allergy dermatitis, non-healing wounds, bite wound abscesses, anal gland disease, and skin cancer.
